Our History

The Swahili Church in Chicago was founded through the vision and faith of Pastor Kamugu Paul, who carried a burden to see Swahili-speaking communities in Chicago gather around the Gospel. As immigrants and families from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi arrived in the city, he recognized the need for a spiritual home where people could worship in their heart language and find encouragement in a new cultural setting.

In its earliest days, the fellowship began in homes and small rented spaces, where prayer, worship, and Bible study knit believers together as a family. Pastor Kamugu’s vision of a Christ-centered community took shape as Swahili became the bridge uniting diverse nationalities and cultures. The chapel quickly became more than a church service; it became a place of belonging, discipleship, and hope.

Under his leadership, the church grew steadily, serving not only immigrants but also the wider Chicago community. Partnerships with local churches and ministries strengthened its mission, while outreach initiatives extended the message of Christ to neighbors near and far.

Today, the Swahili Church in Chicago stands as a testimony of Pastor Kamugu Paul’s faithfulness and God’s providence. It continues to be a place where the Gospel is proclaimed, families are nurtured, and believers are equipped to live missionally in Chicago and beyond.

Our mission as a Church is to glorify God by discipling believers, equipping generations, and sharing the Gospel in word, service, and love, serving the Swahili-speaking diaspora and the wider Chicago community.

Our Belief

At Chicago Swahili Chapel, our faith is centered on Jesus Christ and shaped by the truth of God’s Word. We hold to the historic Christian faith and seek to live it out in love, unity, and mission.

God
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of all things.
Jesus Christ
We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. Through His life, death on the cross, and resurrection, He provides salvation and eternal life to all who believe.
The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit dwells in every believer, empowering us to live holy lives, guiding us in truth, and equipping us for service and mission.
The Bible
We believe the Bible is God’s inspired Word, our final authority for faith, teaching, and life.
Salvation
We believe salvation is a gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ alone—not by works but through His sacrifice and resurrection.
The Church
We believe the Church is the body of Christ, called to worship God, build one another up in faith, and proclaim the Gospel to all nations. At Chicago Swahili Chapel, we are a family of believers from many nations, united by Christ and committed to making Him known.

Meet Pastor Paul

Pastor Kamugu Paul is the founder and vision bearer of the Swahili Church in Chicago. With a deep passion for the Gospel and a heart for the Swahili-speaking community, he was used by God to plant a fellowship where immigrants, families, and students could worship in their heart language and grow in faith.

His vision was simple yet profound: to know Christ and to make Him known. Through prayer, teaching, and shepherding, Pastor Paul laid the foundation for a church that has become a spiritual home for many. Under his leadership, the congregation grew from small gatherings in homes into a vibrant community marked by worship, discipleship, and outreach.

Pastor Paul’s legacy is one of faithfulness, perseverance, and love for God’s people. His ministry continues to inspire the church to pursue Christ wholeheartedly and to extend His love beyond cultural and national boundaries.
